Kasese Bans Nsenene after scores vomited the insects

Health Authorities in Kasese Municipality are investigating circumstances under which a section of people allegedly started vomiting and developing stomachache shortly after eating grasshoppers commonly known as “Ensenene”.


Dr. Joy Muhindo, the Kasese Municipal Health Officer, says she was alerted by the District Surveillance Team that over the weekend members of some households in Kasese Municipality started vomiting and developed stomach pain after allegedly eating grasshoppers.

According to her, the affected households are from Kisanga B, Kamulikwizi and Nyakasanga West among others in Nyamwamba Division.


The Medical Officer also reveals that after the incident they were forced to take samples from the live and cooked grasshoppers which were taken by Uganda Virus Research Institute, now waiting for the results.

Mr. Pimako Kasereka, the Nyamwamba Division L. C III Chairperson also told our reporter that he was told about a related incident which  happened at Rwimi in Bunyangabu district.

Following the incident in his Division, Mr. Kasereka has since directed the residents to put at halt the act of consuming grasshoppers until the results are released.

Thembo Kasiba, the Municipal Councilor representing the people of Kamulikwizi and Kanyangeya Main Electoral Area told our reporter that at least 15 households in his elective area have also experienced the same problems shortly after allegedly eating grasshoppers.


Some of the affected persons confirmed to our reporter that after eating the said grasshoppers, they immediately started vomiting and feeling stomach pain and running stomachs.
