A five billion shilling Cathedral is to be built in the southwestern Uganda Diocese of Muhabura to accommodate the increasing number of believers there and also project the dignity of the Diocese and glorify God’s name.
According to Muhabura Diocese Bishop Cranmer Mugisha who is spearheading efforts to raise funds to construct the 3,000 seater cathedral, the first aging church structure has become small for the congregation.
He explains that since the inauguration of Muhabura Diocese in 1990, the church was meant for 800 worshipers the current population cannot fit in the cathedral and asked for support from Government and other well-wishers to complete the new cathedral.
This was during the 4th diocesan convention held at the diocese headquarters in Kisoro municipality over the weekend where close to another 65 million shillings in cash was raised during a mini fundraising that was called to support Muhabura Bishop construction bag.
According to the head of laity in the diocese, John Terahayo, already about 500 million shillings in cash and pledges has been raised to kick start the work to which the Vice President, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi delivered 20 million shilling contribution from government.
Ssekandi in the speech he read on behalf of President Museveni after ground breaking for the cathedral, President Museveni commended the people Kisoro for coming together in building the new cathedral without waiting for foreign support as was the case in the past.
He said that the NRM Government values such formidable contribution and pledged Government continued support to church initiatives saying the Church is an important conduit for attitude change towards development, value hard work and self reliance.
The President congratulated the people and leadership of Muhabura upon choosing what he called noble cause of the construction of a new cathedral and urged all the people and leaders in Kisoro to support the project until its completion.
The function attracted several church leaders including the retired charismatic Archbishop of the church of Uganda, Luke Orombi and several other bishops from Rwanda, Congo and Tanzania, Members of Parliament and Kisoro District leaders.
