NUP Explains delay in returning Wameli’s body

By Nathan Ngobi

The National Unity platform (NUP) finally came up and explained the delay in the return of Anthony Wameli’s body, the party’s senior lawyer who died in USA early February 2023.

John Baptist Nambeshie the opposition chief whip in parliament and Manjiya county MP in Bududa district told The Second Opinion that the delays are purely the slowness in the documentation process mainly of transporting a dead body from USA to Uganda and not funds.

“The problem of the delay is not about lack of funds as most individual propagandist machines our  political  enemies are spreading. NUP has a big political leadership  who solicited enough funds to bring the casket of our late comrade Wameli back home,  but the matters are on arrangements of documentations from both sides of Governments (Uganda and USA),” Said Nambeshie.

Government of Uganda needed to write to their counterparts of USA but the process has a lot of bureaucracy just like you saw upon the death of  Uganda’s former speaker Jocob Oulanya who died in the USA,  the body took almost a month to arrive here, added Nambeshie.

He said that soon the remains of lawyer Wameli would “arrive here and then a proper announcement about his sendoff would be given to the country.”

He said that at this point, the country needs to give a lot of support to the young family that Wameli left behind, the widow and three young children that need help from all kinds of people to support them in the absence of Wameli.

The body will be shipped   in a specialized container and   placed in the cargo hold of the airplane. Then one of the contracted funeral services companies here will take care of getting the container to the destination funeral home, Nambeshie pointed out.

Anthony Wameli Yeboah the head of legal for opposition National Unity platform (NUP) who was named the best criminal lawyer 2020/2021 by the Uganda law society (ULS) died on Wednesday 08th February 2023 at Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts, USA.

Wameli,  was also a pastor at Ebenezer Christian Fellowship in Kanyanya, he  rose to the limelight in 2017 when he represented key  suspects accused of murdering former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his bodyguard Kenneth Erau and driver, Godfrey Wambewa.

He was also the legal representative of Jamilu Mukulu, the alleged head of the rebel Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and former presidential candidates retired Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde and  NUP’s president Robert Kyagulanyi.

Wameli will be buried in Namisindwa district in Bugisu sub region eastern Uganda.
