The Uganda Police Force has started the process of recruiting 10,000 probationer police constables.
AIGP Jesse Kamunanwire, Police’s Director for Human Resource Management, says that the process is free of charge.
The process, however, comes at a time when the country is getting ready for the 2026 general elections. The Force is also currently implementing the sub-county police model. At least 18 officers are required to be at the sub-county level, as per the new directive.
In January 2025, local media reported that the force needs about Shs 18 billion to recruit 50,000 officers.
As of the latest data in January 2025, Uganda’s police-to-population ratio is approximately 1 police officer for every 812 people, a slight improvement from the 1:941 ratio a few years ago, though still below the UN’s recommended 1:220.
