Police Chiefs to lose jobs as Directorates Merge

By Francis Otucu

Some officers at the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) are expected to lose jobs after an order to merge directorates.

According to an online publication, Spyreports, Directorate of Traffic and Road safety will be merged with Directorate of Fire and rescue services. It will then be headed by Director Traffic. Sources add, Fire and Rescue Services will become a department under Traffic and will be headed by an officer at the rank of Commissioner.

The Directorate of Special Duties in the office of the Inspector General of Police will be put under the office of Joint Chief of staff while the Directorate of Peace support Operations will now be under the Directorate of Interpol and International Relations.

The Directorate of Human resource Development will be merged with Directorate of Human Resource Administration. Police sources add that Directorate of Kampala Metropolitan, Field Force will be moved under Directorate of Operations.

News of this merger, sources say, broke in a meeting convened by President Yoweri Museveni recently.

The meeting was reportedly attended by IGP Martins Okoth Ochola, Deputy IGP Maj. Gen. Sabiiti Muzeeyi and Security Minister Gen. Elly Tumwiine.

The argument of merging directorates was that a lot of money is spent on directorates yet no much work is seen given duplication of directorates.

It is then that the President reportedly advised that directorates be merged.
