RECKLESS DRIVING: Inside Prof. Barya Negotiation With Deceased Family

By Francis Otucu

It is not a secret anymore that Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba is facing charges of reckless driving leading up to death of a pedestrian in Kampala.

This, after a July 1, 2020 incident in which he knocked a female pedestrian, Mariam Jagenda, dead.

Barya was driving a Mercedes benz registration number “U” when he knocked two female pedestrians and a perimeter wall, killing Jagenda while another was left injured. The incident happened at  Kiibuli – Muyenga junction, Makindye Division, Kampala.

This news site understands that Jagenda’s body was taken to city mortuary for postmortem, the injured to the hospital for first aid and treatment while he was detained at Kabalagala Police Division.

However, The Second Opinion understands that Barya was granted police bond at 6pm that day after complaining of chest pain arising from the accident.

Now, well-placed sources say, responsibly, the ex-Makerere University Vice Chancellor is negotiating his way out with Jagenda’s family. For starters, he footed funeral bills. He was also represented at the funeral. Not much is known as to how much he is willing to fork out of his pockets. He is also said to be in talks with the survivor, Mariam Namusoke’s family as he caters for her bill at Mulago Hospital. Meanwhile, his file is still with the Resident State Attorney for advice. It remains to be seen who the the RSA’s advice will be.
