Rubaga: NRM Youth Leaders Petition Party to Disqualify Ssewakiryanga Musa Over Age Fraud

A group of youth leaders from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Kampala District have formally petitioned the party’s district registrar, calling for the immediate disqualification of Ssewakiryanga Musa as the party’s flag bearer for Male Youth Councillor, Kampala District, citing age ineligibility and fraudulent misrepresentation.

The petition, signed by four NRM youth officials including division chairpersons and councillors, alleges that Ssewakiryanga, who is contesting under the youth category, exceeds the legal age limit defined under the National Youth Council Act, which restricts eligibility to persons 30 years of age or younger.

According to the petitioners, public records and voter registration details indicate that Musa was born in 1993, making him 32 years old, two years beyond the allowable age to contest in youth elections.

In a damning accusation, the youth leaders claim that during his 2020 nomination, Musa swore an affidavit declaring himself 27 years old, an act they argue constitutes perjury and gross misconduct under both Ugandan law and the NRM Constitution.

“This is not just a violation of the law—it is a betrayal of the trust young people place in the party. The NRM cannot afford to be seen shielding candidates who knowingly misrepresent facts,” reads part of the petition.

The petition cites Article 8 of the NRM Constitution, which demands honesty and integrity from its leaders, and calls for disciplinary measures against Musa under Article 3(5), which provides for action against members who compromise the party’s reputation.

The petitioners also warned that failure to act could result in automatic disqualification by the Electoral Commission, loss of the seat to opposition parties, and erosion of public confidence in NRM’s internal vetting mechanisms.

The group is demanding not only immediate disqualification of Ssewakiryanga Musa, but also a broader review of nominee vetting processes, including public scrutiny of candidate documents to ensure compliance with the law and party ethics.

As of press time, the NRM Kampala District office had not issued an official response to the petition.
