Kampala—Security operatives, working closely with Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) intelligence, have arrested a suspect accused of posing as the URA Commissioner General and other senior tax officials in a series of impersonation attempts.
The suspect, Thomas Odeke, is alleged to have masqueraded as Commissioner General John Musinguzi, as well as Commissioner of Domestic Taxes, Commissioner of Customs, and various URA tax officers. According to Robert Kalumba, URA Assistant Commissioner for Public and Corporate Affairs, Odeke’s impersonations spanned multiple locations and targeted unsuspecting members of the public.
Odeke was apprehended on Monday while driving a vehicle bearing registration number UA541DM, following a tip-off from the public. He is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Kalumba urged the public to report any suspicious activity to URA via the toll-free number 0800257700, and warned against paying taxes to individuals’ phone numbers. He emphasized that all tax payments should be made through authorized banks only.
