Ugandan among finalists for 2019 AWIEF Awards

The Cabinet of Uganda has approved the bid for the country to host the upcoming 2019 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs).
The MAMAs were established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa (now Viacom International Media Networks Africa) to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa. The 2008 and 2010 events took place in Nigeria, first in Abuja and then in Lagos.
Kenya was the first country in East Africa that hosted the awards back in 2009 where singer Nameless and his wife Wahu (also a singer) won big at the awarding night.
Over the years, Uganda has only been nominated in three editions with singers Radio & Weasel (2014), Bebe Cool and Jose Chameleone (2015), Eddy Kenzo, Sheebah Karungi and Bebe Cool (2016).
Uganda will be hosting the eleven year old awards after not being held for the last two years.
Hosting of the event is expected to; showcase the best of Uganda to a Pan-African and Global audience, provide a platform that empowers Ugandan and other African Artists whilst celebrating creative diversity and excellence. Empower the Uganda youth through job and internship opportunities during the campaign, thereby maximizing skills transfer opportunities.
It will also create public relations opportunities for Tourism stakeholders with global media outlet and profile Uganda across 48 Countries in Africa and 60 territories around the world that Viacom International Media Networks African channels broadcast to.
The nominees in the different categories, venue and date will be announced by the organizers in due time. The awards ceremony usually air live on MTV Base, MTV and BET.
Uganda will also participate in EAC Arts and Culture Festival (JAMAFEST) to be held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania from 21st to 28th September, 2019.
