Uganda’s coffee exports rose by about 18 percent to 463,709 60-kilo bags in July 2019 compared to 393,002 60-kilo bags exported in the same period last year, according to Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), the regulator of the coffee sub sector.
According to the UCDA report, coffee exports in July 2019 fetched the country US$45.26 million, which was about 11.6 percent jump when compared to US$40.68 million earned in the same month last year.
However, coffee exports for ten months (October 2018 to July 2019) totalled to 3,600,827 bags worth US$ 355 million compared to 3,659,853 bags worth US$ 397 million the previous year, a drop of 1.61 percent and 10.67 percent in quantity and value respectively.
By comparing quantity of coffee exported by type in the same month of last coffee year (June 2018 and 2019), Robusta registered a percentage increase both in quantity and value (16.76 percent and of 11.32 percent) respectively. Arabica exports registered a percentage increase in both quantity and value (24.52 percent and 10.97 percent respectively.
Coffee exports for the month of August are projected to be 460,000 bags. The main harvest season in Greater Masaka and Greater Bushenyi continues.
The destinations of Uganda’s coffee exports during the month of July
Exports to Italy had the highest market share with 32.90 percent (33.01 percent). It was followed by Germany with 13.69 percent (11.71 percent), Sudan 12.23 percent (6.04 percent), India 5.97 percent (9.61 percent) and Switzerland 4.68 percent (2.64 percent). Coffee exports to Africa amounted to 82,111 bags, a market share of 17.71 percent compared to 45,497 bags (13.32 percent) the previous month. Europe remains the main destination for Uganda’s coffees .The figures in brackets represent percentage market share held in June 2019.
Update on planting coffee seedlings
According to UCDA, a total of 174,064,819 Coffee seedlings were allocated for first planting season (March to May 2019) of these; Central had 43,269,591; Eastern 50,627,770; Western 29,030,976, Northern 15,988,912, South western 14,834,870 and Rwenzori 20,312,700 seedlings. There were no allocations made for June and July 2019.
