Water PS Okidi Assures Stakeholders on water and environment laws, policies

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water and Environment has said his office is aware of the urgent need to strengthen water and environment laws and policies.

Alfred Okot Okidi was addressing participants at the 11th Joint Technical Review held Thursday at Wash and Wills hotel in Mbale District.

Okidi said the responsible team is doing their best to fast track the process which he said will go a long way in ensuring sustainable utilization of the vital but yet endangered resources.

Earlier, junior water minister, Ronald Kibuule had highlighted the need for an independent fully pledged environment court as a solution to increased environmental degradation, restoration of damaged ecosystems
and increased sensitization efforts in water and environment resource management.

Dr. Mary Goretti Kitutu, the State Minister for Environment on her part recommended that Local Government adopt an ordinance system in a bid to protect the environment.

She also requested Water and Environment Sector stakeholders to ensure that their interventions create visible impacts at the grass root level and advised the National Forest Authority to prioritize the issue of Carbon credit.

The three-day event held under the theme ‘Bridging the Gap between the Increasing Demand and Existing Sector Financing’ was meant to discuss matters that came up in the 10 undertakings from JTR10 in 2018
and also to carryout field visits to Kapchorwa, Tororo, Pallisa, Bukedea and Manafwa Districts.

Parliamentary Natural Resources Committee, Sector Development Partners, National Water and Sewage Corporation, National Forest Authority, National Environment Management Authority, Local Governments CSO and NGOs supporting the Water and Environment Sector programs and activities were part of this year’s JTR11.
