The Ugandan government has dismissed fresh claims by Rwanda that it has further arrested a number of Rwandans and denied them access to legal services.
The permanent secretary ministry of Foreign Affairs Amb. Patrick Mugoya says he is not aware of any Rwandan national in any Ugandan detention center.
While presiding over celebrations to mark 26 years of Rwanda’s liberation in Kampala last weekend, Rwandan High Commissioner to Uganda, Frank Mugambagye said, “The multiple unjustified arrest of Rwandans living in Uganda remains a sticking issue in the ongoing bilateral negotiation.”
However Amb Mugoya says the recent decongestion of prisons as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown, had Rwandan and Congolese prisoners among those that were pardoned by President Museveni.
Rwanda’s fresh claims of the arret of its citizens come at the time when the countries have not solved previous political questions that saw Rwanda close its border with Uganda as well as preventing its citizens from visiting Uganda and banning Ugandan exports into Rwanda.
