I am in danger of being killed by mafias- Minister Anite cries out

By George Mangula

State Minister for Investment and Privatisation Evelyn Anite on Monday claimed that the mafias want to kill her amid controversy surrounding the administration and privatisation of financially inept Uganda Telecom Ltd (UTL).

Minister Anite who months ago wanted UTL Administrator, Bemanya Twebaze removed from office, said meetings had been held at Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) offices and Kampala Club, to discuss her. Bemanya is the Executive Director of URSB.

“The plan by the mafias is to take Anite out of the picture. I might die but history will judge them. You know the mafias, they are the ones who have been blocking the audit. Do not live in denial,” Anite told journalists in Kampala on Monday morning at the Finance Ministry’ headquarters.

“We shall chase the wrong people out of government and bring the right ones. How do you put public funds on private accounts? I am not seeking attention, these are facts,” the Minister said, when asked by journalists.

“I have been hearing some Ugandans saying, You girl from Koboko, what do you know? You are just a worker. This government belongs to Banyankole”. That is not what I heard from my president,” she said.

In the recent past Anite has had exchanges with government officials including like the Attorney General William Byaruhanga and his deputy Mwesigwa Rukutana over the sacking of Bemanya and audit of UTL.
