Entebbe municipal council chokes on heaps of garbage

Locals in Entebbe Division A” risk contracting various deadly diseases
because of uncollected heaps of garbage at Lunyo dumping site just in
the Junction at Magala trading center.

The angry locals say their lives are in danger because the garbage has stayed there for more than a year and council has been adamant on the issue citing lack of funds to fuel the garbage trucks.

The affected locals led by their LC1 chairperson, Ronald Kayizi, told the press that council last collected garbage at the said site 2years ago yet when it rains the garbage runs to their houses posing a health hazard to their lives.

The disgruntled locals  revealed that what is most worrying them is the management of Entebbe General Referral hospital that treats Covid-19 patients that  has continued to dump wastes in form of cotton, used equipment at this very garbage site hence posing a health danger to them and scrap dealers who collect scrap from there.

Sheila Nduhukire, the spokesperson of National Medical stores (NMS), condemned one of their truck drivers, who dumped garbage at the said garbage site yet he knew very well the organization has proper channels of waste management and disposal.

‘” The truck garbage driver will be penalized for individual actions and as NMS we strongly condemn this act and that is why upon learning of it we decided to send our garbage trucks to remove all the garbage at the dumping site.

Fabrice Rulinda, the Entebbe Municipality mayor, admitted that the uncollected garbage pose a health hazard to locals and that council has developed a permanent solution to close down the contentious garbage site.

“ I inherited the issue of uncollected garbage from my predecessor but however council has developed permanent solutions to end this. As Entebbe municipal council we shall be collecting garbage from each homestead,” he said.

Rulinda hailed NMS for supporting municipal council with garbage
trucks that removed the uncollected heaps of garbage and pledged to
deploy an enforcement team to ensure no further dumping of garbage at
this site.
