The NRM Election Disputes Tribunal has sent Jacqueline Mbabazi for a fresh rerun after nullifying her victory as a flag bearer for Older Persons MP (Western Region), citing over-voting and ineligible voters. National Resistance Movement (NRM) Election Disputes Tribunal went ahead and ordered Dr. Tanga Odoi, the party’s Electoral Commission chairman, to organise a fresh poll within 14 days.

The ruling marks a major setback to the wife of former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi and former NRM secretary General who was declared winner of the August election with a narrow margin of seven votes. The race hangs between Jacqueline Mbabazi and her rival, Patrick Kyamukate Mutabwire who petitioned the tribunal, presenting multiple evidence of inflated voter rolls and over-voting.
According to the tribunal, the certified register issued after the first ruling showed 28 duplicate entries, five illegal replacements, and three deceased persons. More critically, while the register listed 364 eligible voters, the Declaration of Results recorded 430 ballots cast with an excess of 66 votes” Musiime explained adding that irregularities fatally compromised the election and substantially affected the results,” the ruling read in parts.
However, much Mutabwire argued that after deducting the ineligible votes he would emerge winner by 29 votes, the panel declined to declare him flag bearer, ruling that it was impossible to precisely trace and allocate all the disputed ballots.
