Reports seeping in from Parliament show that Ugandans will have to fork out some Shs193million to pay Over The Top (OTT) tax and mobile internet bills for Members of Parliament (MPs). Any talk of additional benefits for legislators usually doesn’t go down well with Ugandans and this case is no exception.
From the camp of Kyaddondo East MP, Robert Sentamu Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), it is expected that he is to resign his seat in protest, according to sources relating these things with his acclaimed “pro-people stance” in politics.
“The bare minimum we expect of him is to reject these benefits, not forgetting the other perks that have been appropriated by MPs to themselves of recent,” the source said.
Kyagulanyi had been expected to resign from Parliament when it was announced last month that legislators had increased their allowances by 39%. But his silence on the matter shocked the nation. He received some good whip from Ugandans on social media who accused him and the opposition bench of shedding crocodile tears when attacking Government but who go dead silent when it comes to passing decisions that benefit their own wallets.
Ugandans will be happy when Kyagulanyi quits to preserve his name and honour given how much he resisted the introduction of OTT tax.
