By Our Reporter

President Yoweri Museveni has visited the St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Parish, Maddu, Gomba District, one of the instrumental religious institutions that contributed to his journey to the presidency.

The President, accompanied by his wife Janet Museveni, was hosted by the Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese Rt. Rev. Anthony Zzziwa, together with several clergymen from both the Catholic and Anglican churches. The latter group was led by the Church of Uganda Diocesan Bishop of Central Buganda, Rt. Rev. Michael Lubowa.

In his speech the President told the congregation that some churches and mosques in the country have attachment to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), which he led during the five-year bush war that brought the current government to power in 1986.

He also mentioned some other religious institutions in the ‘cattle corridor’ including Kyankwanzi, Mityana and Luwero, which he promised to visit also.

The President contributed Shs50 million to the parish, and urged the parishioners to engage in commercial farming as a means of alleviating poverty.

In his speech Bishop Zziwa enumerated the activities of the Catholic Church in the area, and told his guests that the investments would boost the standard of people living in the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese.
