No Witch Hunt for Rwandans – Uganda Government

By Francis Otucu

A day after Rwandan authorities reportedly blocked the Rwanda-Uganda border at Katuna, the Ugandan government has assured Rwandese living in the country of safety.

Addressing the media at the Uganda Media Center this morning, government spokesman Ofwono Opondo said no one of Rwandan origin is wanted or being held in Uganda.

“There’s no witchhunt for Rwandese (sic) in Uganda. There’s also nobody from Rwanda being held by the Ugandan authorities for any reason,” he said,

He added: “We would like to send a clear message to Rwanda that there’s no one Uganda is harassing from Rwanda or has in custody.”

Explaining yesterday’s incident, Ofwono said only vehicles are being stopped.

“All vehicles coming from Rwanda enter well into Uganda but it’s the opposite on the Rwandan side. Rwandese aren’t being allowed to travel and enter Uganda but Ugandan nationals are. What is being stopped are only vehicles because of the blockage. However, we’ve not received any information about why Rwandese and trucks are not entering Uganda.

According to Ofwono Opondo, air travel has not been affected.

“All this doesn’t affect air transport. Flights have been going on smoothly at Entebbe Airport whether for Rwanda Air or any other airline. No Rwandans or Ugandans have been affected by this.”

Ofwono also offered an alternative route for motorists.

“We’re advising trucks to use the Ntungamo-Mirama Hills for business to go on normally. The construction at the Gatuna border (Rwanda) with Uganda is making movement difficult,” he said.
