His Royal Highness William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope Kadumbula 1V the Kyabazinga of Busoga (king) has ordered all his kingdom ministers intending to run for 2026 political positions to resign now and quit their respective offices.
According to the Kyabazinga all ministers interested to join elective politics are given an ultimatum of 21 days to quit office with a deadline of 30th April 2025.
In a letter signed by the Kingdom’s Prime Dr. Joseph Muvawala Nsekere, the directive seeks upholding
the non-partisan nature of Obwa Kyabazinga Bwa Busoga (OBB) and preserving unity among its subjects.
In a memo dated April 7 2025 and circulated to all cabinet ministers with copies to the Chiefs, Royal Council and the Speaker of the Busoga Lukiiko—Dr. Muvawala reaffirmed the Kingdom’s stance on political neutrality.
“The Obwa Kyabazinga Bwa Busoga is a cultural institution that brings together all people within its jurisdiction, regardless of political ideology or belief,” the memo stated.
“Any member of the OBB Cabinet desirous of direct participation in partisan politics shall be required to tender in his or her written resignation, not later than the 30th April 2025” read parts of the dossier.
Recently, the Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga criticized the Kingdom of sponsoring and backing political opponents against her both in Kamuli district and CEC where analysts disclosed that Kadaga’s remarks
may have influenced the Kyabazinga to take a stern step, amid growing concern about the cultural institution’s perceived political leanings.
“I worked so much to make Gabula the Kyabazinga of Busoga because President Museveni didn’t like him. But I am surprised the Kingdom is fronting people to stand against me,” Kadaga was overheard on a local radio talk show at Busoga One FM based in Jinja city.
She added that since September 2013 on enthroning the Kyabazinga, the Kingdom has been appointing members of the cabinet from different sorts of life and these included politically active figures, the business world, the elites, opinion leaders among others.
Among the political birds demanded to resign is David Isabirye Aga, the current Jinja North MP and the Kingdom’s State Minister for Information, James Mukembo, the Kingdom’s youth affairs minister and former Jinja District youth council chairperson eyeing for Kagoma North constituency.
Also under scrutiny is Veronica Kagona Venna, state minister for youth affairs in the Kingdom, who is also reportedly set to oust the Kamuli district woman MP and Third deputy Prime minister Rebecca Kadaga, come 2026 general elections.
Others include Joan Machora Kito who is the minister for foreign affairs in the Kingdom interested to contest for the mayoral election of Jinja City on the NRM ticket against NUP’s incumbent Kasolo Alton Okocha.
While some view the move as a much-needed step to restore the Kingdom’s credibility and impartiality, others see it as a shake-up long overdue.
The Kyabazinga is yet to conduct a significant shake-up of his cabinet since 2013 where a number of ministers have reportedly been dormant in Kingdom affairs while others have taken up civil service roles or appointments as Resident District Commissioners, actively mobilising for the ruling NRM party ahead of the 2026 elections.
Mulungi Samuel Buwoza contesting for the Post of Mayuge district chairperson on the NRM ticket revealed that the directive is a significant definition of reshaping both the Kingdom and the broader political landscape in the region.
“This is now seen as a defining moment, reshaping both the Kingdom’s leadership and the broader political landscape in Busoga as the country edges closer to the polls”.Mulungi said.
