Bad news coming in from the camp of Senegal is that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been ruled out of the AFCON 2019. Mendy got injured right before his national team’s game against Kenya on Monday night. The 27-year-old Reims shot stopper was taken through tests to ascertain the extent of the injury. This was before Coach Elio Cisse ruled him out of the tournament. Later, Senegalese team announced the injury of a broken finger and the need for surgery. Cisse was forced to utilize the services of second choice goalkeeper, Alfred Gomis who plays for Italian Serie A side, SPAL. Before suffering injury, Mendy played 38 games in Ligue 1 this season, only conceding 42 goals and keeping 14 clean sheets. This earned him links to Rennes before his club snubbed the deal. He is also reportedly wanted in England.
Bring on Senegal – Cranes Coach Desabre
After successfully crawling out of the group stages, thanks to a DR Congo Vs Zimbabwe, Uganda Cranes are to face Senegal. Speaking in a post-match interview on Monday, Cranes coach, Desabre Sebastian revealed why he preferred Senegal to Kenya. “I prefer we face Senegal to give us chance to play another strong team,“ he said.
The Cranes are in the next round of the AFCON after a 2-1 defeat in the hands of the Pharaohs last night.
Congo’s win Vs Zimbabwe was not enough to see them qualify as second placed team while Zimbabwe could only afford to remain at the tail of the table.
