Tourist Kidnap: 8 Arrested, Gov’t Tells off Trump

By Francis Otucu

By last night, eight people suspected to have had a hand in the kidnap of American tourist and her guide had been arrested by a joint security force. They include Kanungu business people and others alleged to be smugglers and illegal ivory dealers trading between Uganda and neighboring DRC.

Government spokesman, Ofwono Opondo confirmed the arrest in a media briefing at the Media Center in Kampala this morning.

”By last evening, 8 suspects identified as Ugandans had been arrested in connection to kidnapping of the American tourist Kimberly and her Tour Guide,” Ofwono confirmed.

He downplayed rumors of paying ransom.

“The policy of the government of Uganda is that, we don’t pay ransom. What you have been hearing is just rumormongering,” he said.

Responding to US President Donald Trump’s concern, Ofwono said Uganda is safe for its citizens and visitors adding the country does not need any lectures from the States.

“Uganda is a very safe place for its citizens and tourists. We don’t need any lectures from him on how to protect our citizens,” Ofwono stressed.

He noted that measures have been put in place to avert any similar incidents in future.

“We have continuously ensured that in the case of national parks, we have tour guides and operators, trained and security conscious tourism police. We also have Wildlife Wardens & secure borders. We don’t expect similar cases to happen again”
