Rwanda insists its citizens are still advised against travelling to Uganda, even after the Katuna border was re-opened yesterday.
On Sunday, Rwanda foreign minister Richard Sezibera, announced the re-opening of the border that was closed three months ago, but hastened to warn the country’s citizens against travel to Uganda, arguing that some of them are usually ‘arrested’ or ‘deported or denied entry to hundreds of others since January 2018’.
Quoting Dr. Sezibera, The New Times, a Rwanda English daily said Rwanda the temporary re-opening of Gatuna border was for heavy trucks in order to test facilities at the border following the construction of a one-stop border post.
“But Rwandans should continue to heed the travel advisory for their own safety,” The New Times quoted the minister, adding: “The travel advisory has not changed. The travel advisory says that ‘you are strongly advised not to travel to Uganda’. That hasn’t changed.”
