By George Mangula

Uganda will participate at the China at the China International Specialty Coffee Expo 2020. This was revealed on Thursday at Kampala Serena Hotel during a breakfast meeting on country’s participation as a portrait country in China at the China International Specialty Coffee Expo 2020.

Uganda will be the portrait country at the China International Specialty Coffee Expo scheduled from March 18-22, 2020 in Pu’er, Yunnan Province, China. It will be an opportunity for Uganda to position itself as a producer and exporter of quality premium coffees, officials said.

The Expo hosted by Yunnan International Coffee Exchange (YCE) will also provide a platform through which Chinese and international coffee organisations, suppliers, purchasers, among others can establish trade channels and deepen cooperation.

According to officials, participation in the China International Specialty Coffee Expo as a portrait country will give Uganda an opportunity to strategically position itself on the Chinese and Asia Pacific market, through increased awareness, visibility and market penetration.

With China’s population of 1.5 billion people and fast growing coffee drinking culture of 20 percent per annum, most of the global multi-national coffee chains have established presence in China. Therefore this will be an opportunity for Uganda to position itself as a producer and exporter of quality premium coffees, according to Amb. Solomon Rutega who was giving an overview of the coffee market potential in China.

Over 300m Chinese are ranked as middle class with increased purchasing power. On the other hand, Uganda is 1 of the 33 countries that have access to tax free imports into China.
